Finding self-confidence and self-sufficiency in sawdust and wood shavings

April 2022 - Oars!

We found free wood on Craigslist and started our fleet! Here’s a step-by-step guide to how we made three pairs of traditional, 8-foot oars:

  1. Glue up the blanks;

  2. Cut, plane, carve, and sand away everything that isn’t an oar;

  3. Finish with coats of epoxy, spar urethane, and fire engine red paint.

Next project: Build a boat to go under these oars.

May 2022 - Penobscot 13 ($2,500)

Length over all: 12’ 9” || Waterline length: 11’ 5” || Beam: 4’ 3”.

Designed to be built by a team of 5 – 6 students during a two-week course at the WoodenBoat School in Maine. The Penobscot 13 is a delight to row and sail, performing very well under any of the three recommended rigs.

August 2022 - Tammie Norrie 15 ($3,800)

A displacement hull boat designed to achieve greater load carrying capacity and more rig options. It is a superb rowing/sailing machine, with easy movement through the water at displacement speeds, easy rowing action, and the capacity to take small (2hp) out board if you really must.
